Donations
As we near the end of the year, Parallax Press has a lot to celebrate. For nearly twenty years, we have published books on engaged Buddhism and mindful living. From Thich Nhat Hanh's Being Peace in 1987 to the present bestseller Energy of Prayer and popular classics such as Old Path White Clouds and Mindfulness in the Marketplace, we have published over 75 titles that have been translated into more than 30 languages.
As the nonprofit publishing division of the Unified Buddhist Church, our mission is to make books on engaged Buddhism accessible to all readers. To this end, we keep our book prices as low as possible, donate over 5,000 books each year to prisoners and libraries, and have begun an extensive transcription project of all Thich Nhat Hanh's talks. We could not do this without the generous and ongoing support of our readers and of our larger community. In early 2004, Parallax Press worked with our monastic board to strengthen our mission. Our goal is to bring Thay's work to the largest possible audience and, at the same time, increase our publication of new teachers of mindfulness.
We need your support more than ever if we are to continue with implementing this mission. There are several ways you can contribute to the donation program of the Unified Buddhist Church and Parallax Press. We hope that you can join us in our growth and make a gift to any of the below options.
We send our warmest regards and heartfelt appreciation for any amount you can offer.
With palms joined,

Donation Benefiting the Prison Program
"It would not be correct to say that a young man in prison bears the whole responsibility for his crime. He is the product of his family, his schooling and his society. If we look deeply we may find that when he was younger, his parents often fought and caused each other and their child to suffer. Perhaps he was abused. Lacking love, lacking education, he tried to forget himself in drugs. With drugs, his ability to make good choices diminished even further. Committing a crime was the result.
Looking deeply, we see that the conditions for this young man's actions did not arise only from his own mind and experiences. All of us bear some responsibility for creating the conditions that led him into the cycle of crime and addiction. If we only condemn and punish him, it will not help. People use drugs because they are in pain and want to run away from life. Putting someone who is suffering like this in prison is not the way to solve the problem. There has to be love and understanding, some means of bringing him back into life, offering him joy, clarity, and purpose."
Thich Nhat Hanh, from Understanding Our Mind
You may make a donation on behalf of a specific inmate. For every $8.00 donated, Parallax Press will send a copy of Be Free Where You Are, a Dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh at the Maryland Correctional Facility in October 1999, to a prisoner or prison library (in an 80-page paperback booklet version). You may also make contributions of any size to the prison program. These funds will be used to fulfill the numerous requests Parallax Press receives from incarcerated individuals or prison libraries requesting donations of our publications.

Donations Benefiting Educational Institutions
Recognizing that the seeds of depression, misunderstanding, and violence are planted early in life, the Unified Buddhist Church and Parallax Press have increased their efforts to bring tools for non-violent conflict resolution into schools, youth halfway houses, and other institutions. By making publications about mindful practices, meditation, and living in the present moment available to these institutions, we seek to alleviate future suffering. Your contributions will be used to send free copies of our books and tapes to institutions and organizations that approach us with donation requests.
Donations Sponsoring the Publications of Selected Titles
Parallax Press is pleased to offer new donor benefits for donations of $250 or more. In recognition of a donation at this level, your name will appear as a sponsor in an upcoming title and you will receive a free copy of up to three titles we are preparing for publication in a year.
